What Is Gummy Smile Correction?

Gummy smile correction may be known by a few different names, such as gum recontouring, gum contouring, gingivoplasty, or gingival sculpting. It may also be known as crown lengthening. (In some contexts, crown lengthening refers to a slightly different procedure. If you are ever in doubt about the details of a recommended treatment, simply ask our team!)

The purpose of gummy smile correction is to reshape the gumline. It can address a few different issues, including:

  • Excess gum tissue that makes the teeth appear disproportionally short.Removing a bit of gum tissue may make your teeth appear longer.
  • Receding gums that makes the teeth appear usually long. In some cases, a gum graft may be used alongside gingivoplasty to achieve the desired results.
  • An uneven gumline. If your gumline fluctuates in height and appearance from tooth to tooth, gummy smile correction may be able to help.

What Happens During and After the Procedure?

One of the first things we will do during your appointment is numb your mouth. We may also administer sedation. Once you are comfortable, we will use precise instruments to carefully remove just enough gum tissue to create a more even, more visually appealing gumline. Depending on the extent of your treatment, you may need to return for two or more appointments. We typically work on one portion of the mouth at a time.

After your surgery, some soreness and tenderness are to be expected. Our team will provide detailed instructions to help you enjoy a smooth recovery. Most patients return to feeling normal within a few weeks of their procedure.

Benefits of Gummy Smile Correction

Gummy smile correction offers several potential benefits, including:

  • Natural-looking results. Our periodontists have a keen eye for detail and aim to make your new look as natural and beautiful as possible.
  • Long-lasting results. In most cases, gummy smile correction provides a lifetime of results. Unless you have certain medical conditions, the removed gum tissue will not regrow and once again interfere with your mouth’s aesthetics.
  • The ability to pursue further cosmetic treatments. After your gumline is reshaped, you may become a candidate for other aesthetic procedures, such as veneers or metal-free crowns.
  • Oral health benefits. Excess gum tissue can easily trap food and become irritated. Gum recontouring may make it easier for you to maintain a healthy smile and thorough oral hygiene.
  • Increased confidence. A beautiful smile may help you to feel more confident in social situations!
