Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option out there that replaces the roots of the missing teeth – not just the chewing surface. This allows for a wide range of additional benefits, including additional stability and longevity. To achieve these benefits, getting dental implants requires a surgical procedure. Continue reading to learn what you can expect, including the length of your procedure.
How Long Does Dental Implant Surgery Take?
Your procedure will begin with your periodontist numbing the area with a local anesthetic. Sedation may also be administered for additional comfort. An incision is made into the gum tissue so the dental implants can be precisely placed into the jawbone at strategic angles. Lastly, the gums are closed and protective caps are placed over the ends of the dental implants to keep them safe as the area heals. The entire surgery will probably take between one and two hours for a single dental implant. If you are getting more than once, this will lengthen the surgery time. During your consultation, your periodontist will give you a more specific time estimate so you can plan accordingly.
How Long Does It Take to Recover from Dental Implant Surgery?
After your surgery is complete, you can go home to begin the recovery period. This can take anywhere from three to six months. During this time, the titanium implants will fuse to the jawbone in a process called “osseointegration.” This is what makes dental implants so sturdy and long-lasting.
Some swelling and discomfort are normal for the first few days following your surgery. This can be managed with over-the-counter and prescribed pain relievers. Within a few weeks, this should subside. You should take steps to keep the area clean and avoid foods that could aggravate the surgical site. Once the implant has fused with your jawbone, you can return for your next visit.
Finishing the Dental Implant process
You will need to undergo another small procedure. This is when abutments are placed on the ends of your implants. Impressions are taken so your restoration(s) can be customized at the dental laboratory. Once they are ready, you can return to the dental practice. Your dentist will secure your replacement teeth to your implants via the abutments. If everything looks and feels great, you will be free to show off your new and complete smile!
Getting dental implants can take some time, but it will all be worthwhile when you get to display your pearly whites with pride once again!
